Role of Sea Surface Microlayer Properties in Cloud Formation

چکیده

To date, the relative contribution of primary marine organic matter to subset atmospheric particles that nucleate cloud droplets is highly uncertain. Here, condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements were conducted on aerosolized sea surface microlayer (SML) samples collected from North Atlantic Ocean during NASA Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES), κ values predicted for three representative high molecular weight (HMW) components aerosol: 6-glucose, humic acid, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO). The pure aerosols varied by only ±0.01 across all organics chosen. For desalted SML samples, calculations assuming an composition entirely RuBisCO provided closest with a mean value 0.53 ± 0.10. These results indicate it salt in which drives formation potential aerosols. While presence material ocean waters may increase aerosol mass due enrichment processes, mixed organic/salt will be slightly weakened or unchanged compared spray aerosol.

High wind speeds prevent formation of a distinct bacterioneuston community in the sea-surface microlayer

The sea-surface microlayer (SML) at the boundary between atmosphere and hydrosphere represents a demanding habitat for bacteria. Wind speed is a crucial but poorly studied factor for its physical integrity. Increasing atmospheric burden of CO2, as suggested for future climate scenarios, may particularly act on this habitat at the air-sea interface. We investigated the effect of increasing wind ...

Violacein-Producing Collimonas sp. from the Sea Surface Microlayer of Costal Waters in Trøndelag, Norway

A new strain belonging to the genus Collimonas was isolated from the sea surface microlayer off the coast of Trøndelag, Norway. The bacterium, designated Collimonas CT, produced an antibacterial compound active against Micrococcus luteus. Subsequent studies using LC-MS identified this antibacterial compound as violacein, known to be produced by several marine-derived bacteria. Fragments of the ...

Biochemical characteristics and bacterial community structure of the sea surface microlayer in the South Pacific Ocean

The chemical and biological characteristics of the surface microlayer were determined during a transect across the South Pacific Ocean in October-December 2004. Concentrations of particulate organic carbon (1.3 to 7.6-fold) and nitrogen (1.4 to 7-fold), and POC:PON ratios were consistently higher in the surface microlayer as compared to surface waters (5 m). The large variability in particulate...
